Human EGF (urogastrone, nepidermin) is a polypeptide hormone which was first isolated from human urine. It is a potent mitogen for a variety of cultured cells, e.g. fibroblasts. In vivo, urogastrone may have a role in the maintenance of gastrointestinal homeostasis. Furthermore, EGF is used in wound healing.
