Details
Substrate for S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM)-dependent methyltransferases, which methylate the C-terminal S-farnesyl-cysteine residue of several guanine nucleotidebinding proteins (G proteins) which participate in signal transduction. These include the single subunit "small" G proteins such as the p21 ras-related proteins and the heterotrimeric G proteins such as retinal transducin. Thus, a rapid assay for studying this carboxyl methyltransferase activity has been developed. Interestingly, AFC was also shown to inhibit the methylation of the transducin γ-subunit and of Ras-related proteins.
