BCIP · p-toluidine (or X-phosphate · p-toluidine), an indigogenic histochemical substrate for acid and alkaline phosphatases, is used in combination with nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT). The reaction of BCIP · p-toluidine with alkaline phosphatase has also been utilized for a rapid and sensitive colorimetric detection of biotin-labeled DNA probes after Southern blotting.
