Band 3 Protein Fragments

These synthetic peptides represent amino acid sequences found in loop 3 (residues 547-553) and loop 7 (residues 824-829) of human band 3 protein. Both peptides blocked, dose-dependently and in the micromolar range, the in vitro adherence to melanoma cells of erythrocytes infected with the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. As the peptides also inhibited sequestration in vivo, the development of an antiadhesion therapy for cerebral malaria seems possible.
