Homocysteine

The cysteine homolog is formed by S-demethylation of methionine. Contrary to Cys, Hcy can be incorporated and derivatized without risk of racemization and β-elimination.
Base-catalyzed desulfuration of peptides containing a Cys/Hcy mixed disulfide bridge yields cystathionine (carbacystine) peptides.
